How to Care for Suede Shoes: A Complete Guide

I get asked about suede care more than almost anything else. People love the look but worry about ruining it. Honestly, suede is tougher than you think... you just have to know the basics.

Before you wear them

Get a suede protector spray and hit them before the first wear. This is the single most important thing you can do. It takes two minutes and saves you from 90% of stain headaches. We tell every customer this when they pick up a pair from our shop.

The 30-second habit

Keep a suede brush by your door. When you take your shoes off, give them a quick brush in one direction. That is literally it. Dirt does not get a chance to settle in, and the nap stays looking fresh. Most people skip this and then wonder why their suede looks flat after a month.

When something goes wrong

Dry stain? Suede eraser. Rub gently, brush away the dust. Done. Water mark? This one trips people up. You actually want to lightly dampen the whole shoe, stuff it with paper, and let it dry on its own. Sounds counterintuitive but it works. The watermark disappears because the moisture dries evenly.

Where to keep them

In the dust bag, away from sunlight. Sunlight fades suede faster than anything. Cedar shoe trees help keep the shape and pull moisture out. If you are in Dubai, the humidity here can be rough on suede, so those shoe trees really do matter.

When it is beyond you

Some things are better left to someone with the right tools. We do cleaning and restoration at our workshop in Alserkal Avenue. If your suede has deep stains or the colour has shifted, bring them in. We have seen worse and brought them back.
